Kerry McCarthy was first elected as Labour MP for Bristol East in 2005 and re-elected in 2010. Before entering politics she studied Russian and Politics at university, and then qualified as a lawyer. Kerry is currently a shadow minister in the Foreign Office team, covering Latin America and much of Asia, and also has the human rights portfolio. Before this she was a shadow Treasury minister, a Government Whip, and Parliamentary Private Secretary to the International Development Secretary.
Kerry has been vegetarian since 1981 and vegan since 1992. She was the only vegan MP in Parliament when she was first elected, but has now been joined by two other Labour colleagues. In 2011 she had an adjournment debate in Parliament to mark World Vegan Day, and has also spoken out in Parliament on issues such as the environmental impact of the livestock sector and many animal welfare/ ‘green' issues. She was appointed at patron of the Vegan Society at their last AGM, and is also Vice President of the League Against Cruel Sports and a patron of Food Cycle, the food waste charity.
