Welcome to Club Yeyo the original Bristol cool house night from the days of Gazzas tears and Italia 90, now celebrating their 21st birthday in style with a big bash down at Canvas Nightclub in association with VegfestUK. A night of pure hedonism to get the Fringe week started in style – some of us were born to party, and you’ll find plenty of them right here as we roll back the years with some of the biggest tunes that house has ever seenClub Yeyo came of age with their famed sessions on the Thekla in the early 90’s when they lured no lesser luminaries than Paul Oakenfold to town, fresh from his world tour with U2.
With Massive Attack’s Daddy G the Yeyo resident, and their ex MC Willy Wee whipping up the crowd, plus the likes of genuine young Bristol street talent DJ Apollo mixing up a frenzy wherever he went, held together by the infamous double act of CrissCross and Timbo, the founders of the whole escapade, alongside long time collaborators the XXX posse and old skool legends Busta and Tommy Trouble, plus Bristol graffiti originals Inkie and Ego, Club Yeyo soon became synonymous with the best action in town, and played to packed out crowds whilst remaining the epitome of cool.
1992 and 1993 saw the boys export the Bristol vibe to Amsterdam, with a string of storming nites at The Mazzo and the ANP, where the lads were famously mistaken for the Medellin Cartel, before the whole story ended gloriously in tears with the traditional acrimonious splits that ruin only the best rock n roll outfits. ‘Musical differences’ this was not. And of course, a couple of decades later, the priceless reunion, hugs, kisses and grey hair that comes with the territory.
So….to tonight’s action, Club Yeyo’s legendary player manager CrissCross has assembled an all star first team squad that includes himself and Busta in defence, with a midfield including Bristol Sound originators Rob Smith and Ray Mighty, and up front they are joined by North of Ping Pong with a live set. Expect a big crowd and a great vibe from a bunch of types in Bristol who put the P in party a quarter of a century ago and have lived to tell the tale.
